AOL Pulling plug on “Winamp” & “SHOUTcast” on Dec 20, 2013

A few days ago, AOL released the news that it was in the process of shutting down Winamp, the very popular media playing software for Windows that dominated most of the 90’s. Originally developed by Nullsoft, Winamp became a part of AOL through an 80 million dollar acquisition in 1999.

Along with Winamp, AOL also got the rights to streaming media service SHOUTcast,   another Nullsoft product. Recently it came to the light that AOL is negotiating with Microsoft in order to sell off Winamp and SHOUTcast. It has also been revealed that AOL is likely to announce the end of SHOUTcast by next week.

 

Winamp has been around since 1997,  and though it has amassed a large and faithful following in the years since, the good times are coming to an end. The software will cease to be available come December 20th.  Anyone who visits the download page is now greeted by a message warning that they better grab the goods while they're still available, because they won't be a month from now.

Fats Domino is still Alive and Kickin' in New Orleans

Alive and Kickin' is the name of Domino's most recent CD. He's donating the proceeds from sales of the album to the Tipitina's Foundation, which is dedicated to preserving and restoring the musical culture of New Orleans.

In the title track, which was written before Katrina but sounds appropriate now, Domino sings:

All over the country, people wanna know
What ever happened to Fats Domino?
And I'm alive and kickin'
I'm alive and kickin'
I'm alive and kickin'
And I'm where I wanna be.

The Beatles discography 2009 remastered Limited USB Release

On 7 December 2009, The Beatles Stereo Box Set was also released as a limited edition of 30,000 apple-shaped USB flash drives.

 

 This event marks the first appearance for the Beatles catalogue in a high-resolution digital format being encoded in 44.1 kHz/24-bit FLAC format. CD-standard is 44.1/16-bit. The 16 GB flash drive also includes 320 kbps MP3 copies of the albums, a specially designed Flash interface, and all the visual elements from the box set — the mini-documentary films, original UK album art, rare photos and expanded liner notes.

The custom designed flash drive was created by Aderra Media Works, a subsidiary of Aderra Inc.
